Power wheelchair repair guide part2

February 14, 2017

Power wheelchair repair part2

In the previous article, regarding removing faults of power wheelchair repair , I mentioned some general tricks.
In this article, I will tell you about my personal experience that how I removed faults recently and repaired my power chair.
All I did was to guide an electrician. He acted according to my instructions and my power chair got OK.
If you havnt read the first part of the power wheelchair repair  guide , lets read power chair repair techniques

1.Bus cable problem

My electric wheelchair controller consists of two parts. Wheelchair Joy stick and power module. These two units are connected by a bus cable. For quite some time, I was having problems in bus cable. My power chair would stop and show error on the middle of ride. Sometimes it would get OK by moving or unplugging and re-plugging the cable. But the problem gradually increased and repair was inevitable.

First I removed the cable and checked it for continuity test on multi-meter. Bus cable consists of four wires. Two big wires for current and two for programming data. Three out of the four wires were OK. I removed the outer part of the cable and found the wire that failed continuity test. On close examination, I found that a small yellow cable was disconnected.
I reconnected the wire, plugged in the cable again and my power chair got OK showing no sign of error and no stopping in the middle of ride again .

2.Switches problems

The power module of power chair has so many switches. Quite often the switches get loose, become rusty causing the power chair to show error and stop moving. Often, if the switches are unplugged and re-plugged, then the error sign disappears and power chair start moving. But if the switches are dirty and rusty, then proper cleaning is required.
In the picture below, you can see how motor switches of my power chair has caught rust . I got it cleaned with a brush wet with patrol, thoroughly. Repeated the process for all the switches and my power chair stopped showing error and started running smoothly.

So next time, if you have problems with the switches, cleaning them with method above can help a lot and your power chair will run smoothly without any problem. It would help, if you unplug all the switches at regular intervals and clean them. Rust and dust will wipe out, current will flow smoothly between different parts of power chair, resulting in good performance.
